| Focused practice with teen-numeral pairs (12/21, 13/31, etc.). | |||||||||||||||
| WHAT ETHAN CAN DO | |||||||||||||||
| • Recognises most small groups (1–5) at a glance, with occasional slips • Recognises most groups of 6 to 10 at a glance, with occasional slips • Counts to 10 accurately in most arrangements, with occasional slips • Compares numerals correctly on most items, with occasional slips • Reliably reads the written numerals 0 to 20, including the teens and twenty • Understands teen numbers as 'ten plus more' (in either order: 10+4 or 7+10) • Counts to 20 accurately (the counting is secure) • Answers 'more' questions correctly (but treats 'fewer' as if it means 'more') | |||||||||||||||
| WHAT ETHAN IS WORKING ON NEXT | |||||||||||||||
| • Reading teen numerals correctly — the digits are being flipped (12 not 21) • Learning 'fewer' as the opposite of 'more' through paired-question practice • Consolidating subitising of four and five with daily quick-glance practice • Consolidating composition skills with daily dot-pattern practice • Consolidating counting in varied arrangements (rows, grids, scatters) • Consolidating numeral comparison with number-line practice | |||||||||||||||

| Ethan is meeting the Foundation Number standard for this stage of the year. Ethan confidently recognises most small groups (1–5) at a glance, with occasional slips, recognises most groups of 6 to 10 at a glance, with occasional slips, and counts to 10 accurately in most arrangements, with occasional slips. Going forward, Ethan is focusing on reading teen numerals correctly — the digits are being flipped (12 not 21), and learning 'fewer' as the opposite of 'more' through paired-question practice. | |||||||||||||||
| 💬 PARENT-FRIENDLY SUMMARY — paste-ready for parent emails or PTI notes | |||||||||||||||
| Ethan is making solid progress with their early maths and is on track with what we'd expect at this stage of Foundation. I wanted to share where things are going well and what we're working on next. | |||||||||||||||
| What Ethan can do well: Ethan recognises most small groups (1–5) at a glance, with the occasional slip. Ethan also recognises most groups of six to ten at a glance, with occasional slips. Ethan also counts groups of up to ten objects accurately most of the time, with occasional slips. Ethan also compares written numbers correctly on most items, with isolated slips. Ethan also reliably reads the written numbers 0 to 20 when someone says the name — including the teen numbers and twenty. Ethan also understands that each teen number is made of 'ten and some more' (e.g. 14 is ten and four). This is the foundation for place value in Year 1. Ethan also counts groups of up to twenty accurately — the counting is secure. The issue is reading and writing the teen numbers — they sometimes come out flipped (21 instead of 12). Ethan also answers 'more' questions correctly but treats 'fewer' as if it means 'more' and picks the bigger group on 'fewer' questions. | |||||||||||||||
| What we're working on with Ethan next: Ethan anchor: 'teen numbers start with a 1 — the ten comes first'. Show 12 and 21 on cards and practise reading each correctly. Ethan also needs direct teaching of 'fewer' alongside 'more'. Use the same pair of groups and ask both questions ('which has more?' then 'which has fewer?') so your child hears the contrast. | |||||||||||||||
